The first reviews of Top Gun: Maverick are out, and it looks like the Tom Cruise movie has impressed critics. 36 years after the original film, Cruise returns as Pete Mitchell aka Maverick and takes to the skies. The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, also stars Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris.
Variety’s Peter Debruge called the film a “barrier-breaking sequel” and wrote in his review, “Almost nothing in Top Gun: Maverick will surprise you, except for how well it does almost everything audiences want and expect.” It also read: “Top Gun has always been ‘The Tom Cruise Show,’ and no one believes for a second that Maverick won’t maneuver to fly the mission’s climax.”
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter said: “The most memorable part of Top Gun: Maverick – and the scenes that will make new generations swell with pride and admiration for good old American heroism – are the air battles and tactical maneuvers of the pilots. Exactly as they should be.”
IGN’s Matt Donato called Top Gun: Maverick a “higher flying sequel to remember” and wrote, “It’s the Top Gun sequel purists crave.” The review continued: “Top Gun: Maverick is a burst of afterburner fumes and thrillseeker highs that is sure to please audiences looking for a classic summer blockbuster.”
David Ehrlich of IndieWire called it “the most satisfying summer action movie since Mission: Impossible – Fallout.” It further read: “Maverick turns the script on Top Gun around in almost every way that matters, despite – or perhaps because – it stays so true to its structure and ‘nothing to see here!’ political vision.”
Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on May 27, 2022.
