UkraineThe deputy prime minister says all women, children and the elderly have been evacuated from a steel factory in Mariupol long under siege by Russian troops.
Iryna Vereshchuk announced this on Saturday.
She said: “The president’s order has been carried out: all women, children and the elderly have been evacuated from Azovstal. This part of the humanitarian operation in Mariupol has been completed.” She didn’t work out. The Russian Tass news agency had reported that 50 civilians had been evacuated from the factory on Saturday. A similar number departed Friday.
The civilians had held out in the factory while Ukrainian fighters held a last stand to prevent a full-scale takeover of Mariupol.
